"As the smoke clears from the battlefield of the 34-day war in Lebanon, it would be a mistake to count the cost only in fallen masonry and fresh graves. All is changed, changed utterly, by the defeat that the whole of Israel is now debating, from the cabinet through the lively press to the embittered reservists at the falafel stall. Practically the only person in the world who claims Israel won the war is George Bush - and we all know his definition of the words "mission accomplished"." [lire l'article]

"Now we face a similar propaganda distortion of remarks by Iran’s president. Ask anyone in Washington, London or Tel Aviv if they can cite any phrase uttered by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the chances are high they will say he wants Israel “wiped off the map”. Again it is four short words, though the distortion is worse than in the Khrushchev case. The remarks are not out of context. They are wrong, pure and simple. Ahmadinejad never said them. Farsi speakers have pointed out that he was mistranslated.

The Iranian president was quoting an ancient statement by Iran’s first Islamist leader, the late Ayatollah Khomeini, that “this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time” just as the Shah’s regime in Iran had vanished. He was not making a military threat. He was calling for an end to the occupation of Jerusalem at some point in the future. The “page of time” phrase suggests he did not expect it to happen soon. There was no implication that either Khomeini, when he first made the statement, or Ahmadinejad, in repeating it, felt it was imminent, or that Iran would be involved in bringing it about."

Hezbollah was seriously hurt. It lost hundreds of its best fighters. A deeply entrenched infrastructure on Israel's border is in ruins. The great hero has had to go so deep into hiding that Nasrallah has been called the underground mullah.

Most important, Hezbollah's political gains within Lebanon during the war have proved illusory. As the dust settles, the Lebanese are furious at Hezbollah for provoking a war that brought them nothing but devastation -- and then crowing about victory amid the ruins.

VICTORY AMONG THE RUİNS İS A PRETTY LAİM WAY TO CLAİM VICTORY.

Wawa [héhéhé] >> on the internal lebanese part, the so-called "victory" can be discussed... The lebanese are the only responsible for that... And this discussion would turn vicious circle very fast.

But on the regional point of view, if you read the article linked in the post, and the israeli press, and relatively to all the arab military humiliation of this century, Hez's resistance is truely perceived as a victory against the "invincible" IDF; destroying a hundred merkavas, 4 apaches and a ship is something never achieved before.

Thus, the ruins in Lebanon are the best example of IDF's inabilities. They couldn't crush the well-prepared guerilla forces, and they knew it, so they crushed the whole country to "kill" the popular support for Hezbollah... Which is also very lame :)

[it's funny to talk about the "lame way hez revendicates a victory above ruins", and forget about the "lame way of IDF's dismantling a terrorist org"
